Why are Black on White Nursing Home Attacks So Common?

A common problem in nursing homes across the US is resident-on-resident assaults or abuse. According to the National Center for Victims of Crime, they make up 22% of all abuse cases in nursing homes, and many more are left unreported.

But another common problem in in-patient and out-patient care facilities is caretaker on elder abuse.

Many videos posted on social media and shared thousands of times by concerned citizens, result in an arrest by police shortly after going viral. Unfortunately, many of these cases tend to result in negligible sentences.

In some instances, the abusers bail immediately and are reprimanded with just a fine. Many of them roam free today.

A tally just the most recent 25 reported nursing home attacks in America, black or brown perpetrators on white victims were the most common.

Many Twitter users claim that as the nation becomes more diverse, the older white population will be watched over in nursing homes employed by a new more diverse demographic. As white Americans become the minority in the country, attacks like these become increasingly more common.

There are thousands of attacks just like these, and hundreds just in the past few years alone. In almost every single instance, it is a black care worker or several black care workers teaming up to beat helpless elderly white victims.

Take the story of Wakeisha Culler as another example.

A black nurse, that punched a 95-year-old white man in the face repeatedly causing him to lose his right eye. Officers arrested the nurse and charged her with malicious wounding, but she is currently out of jail and roaming freely. It’s the patient and his family who are left struggling the most. The 95-year-old is now blind and completely lost his right eye, never to regain sight for his remaining days.

Outside of interracial attacks occurring in care facilities, the vast majority of interracial attacks in general in the US are committed by black perpetrators.

The Bureau of Justice Statistics released its survey of criminal victimization. According to the study, there were 593,598 interracial violent victimizations between blacks and whites last year, including white-on-black and black-on-white attacks. Blacks committed 537,204 of those interracial felonies or 90 percent, and whites committed 56,394 of them, or less than 10 percent. That ratio is becoming more skewed, despite the Democratic claim of Trump-inspired white violence. In 2012-13, blacks committed 85 percent of all interracial victimizations between blacks and whites; whites committed 15 percent. From 2015 to 2018, the total number of white victims and the incidence of white victimization have grown as well.

Blacks are also over-represented among perpetrators of hate crimes—by 50 percent—according to the most recent Justice Department data from 2017; whites are underrepresented by 24 percent. This is particularly true for anti-gay and anti-Semitic hate crimes.

We have been hearing a lot about Anti-Asian attacks amid the outbreak of COVID-19 in the United States.  Some media outlets have blamed President Trump’s rhetoric, claiming without evidence that the rise in Anti-Asian biased incidents is fueled by President Trump referring to COVID-19 as the ‘Chinese Virus.’

In a list compiled of all of the attacks on Asians in the US where the offender was known and reported, most of the perpetrators of the crimes were black.  The most serious attack of them all, a mass stabbing of an Asian family at a Sam’s Club supermarket, was perpetrated by a Hispanic man.

Imagine if that attack was perpetrated by a white man, what would the media say?
